The Fugitive Beloved · Rumi

The fugitive Beloved is the joy that comes and will not stay. We do not go after it ourselves; we ask our companions — this road is not walked alone.

Song and pretext are all we have. We hold no claim that could summon Him; we offer beauty, so that beauty will come.

Do not take «in a moment» for an answer. What is put off never arrives; nearness is either now, or it is one more excuse.

A warm breath here means a word that does the impossible — tying a knot in water. Against enchantment like that, our own scheming gets nowhere.

When He enters, nothing is left to do but sit and watch. His coming is not our doing — it is God's wonder, and our share of it is only to look.

The beauties of this world are lamps; their light is borrowed. When the sun rises they go out — not because they were bad, but because they have nothing left to add.

A priceless carnelian is one no price will fit. Only the heart can travel that far, and what it carries is not a demand: it is a greeting, and service.
