Let Us Cherish One Another · Rumi

Every meeting is a loan that will one day be called back. Love cannot be postponed until tomorrow — tomorrow one of us may be gone.

In the face of a friend we see ourselves — our beauty and our flaws alike. Turning away from that mirror is running from our own soul.

The protective verses of the Quran are breathed over whatever is most precious, to keep it from harm. We are each other's dearest treasure — why not guard one another with prayer?

Self-interest is wanting something for ourselves out of friendship. Love mixed with bargaining goes dark: it no longer sees the friend, only itself.

The dog here is the ego's temper — suspicion and grudge. The generous once gave their very lives for a friend; what is asked of us is easier: to leave that temper behind.

A reconciliation we are saving for after death was possible all along. A quarrel whose ending is already peace is a lifetime of needless grief.

Surrender is the death before dying: whoever has surrendered has no self left to fight with. With such a one, peace can begin today.

The kiss we save for a grave belongs to a living face. Give love today — tomorrow it has no receiver but the dust.
